Solar panels (or solar modules) are the number one renewable energy choice for most off-grid and grid-interactive installations.  An ideal site for solar panels is one that has a totally unobstructed view of the Southern horizon, stretching also to East and West.  That is perhaps a complicated way of saying that from the solar array location, you should be able to see the sun from dawn to dusk with no buildings, trees, or other obstructions getting in the way.  Even a little bit of shade will reduce power production.  In practice this is sometimes difficult to achieve, especially in forested areas.  From a practical standpoint, the earliest and latest hours of the day are less important for solar energy production, so it is reasonable to allow for some shading during those times as long as the view to the South is totally clear.  In any case, the amount of  electrical power available from any given array is proportional to the number of hours of direct sun it gets, both summer and winter.  Make careful observations at your chosen array location at different times of the year.  Sometimes moving the array just a few feet can make a big difference when obstructions are present.
