Except
in the case of grid-tie systems, batteries are probably the most
important component you will buy. They are expensive, and
subject
to an early death if not properly charged and maintained.
It is sound advice to always
buy the best batteries you can afford. For those reasons I'm
pleased to offer

YEARS. Rated for 2100 charge cycles to 80% depth-of-discharge, and

batteries are engineered
for
a 10 to 20 year service life, making them the best long term battery
value. Fortunately,
prices
are very competitive
with lesser batteries
and shipping
is free to a business address with forklift or loading dock in the
continental US. Most folks ship to a local lumber retailer, or
similar. Solar
One batteries are built from large, 2-volt cells that are housed
in a
heavy-duty steel container. The cells can be removed
individually
to make the battery
easier to manage. Six cells fit in one steel enclosure to
make a
12 volt battery. Multiple 12 volt batteries can easily be
strung
together in series for 24 volt and 48 volt systems. Solar One
batteries are available in TEN sizes, from 845 A/hrs to 2490 A/hrs
capacity. Cell interconnects are included, so there is no
need to
buy
bulky and expensive interconnect cables. The enclosure comes
with
a hinged steel lid (not shown), and the overall package is very tidy.
These are extremely heavy-duty, deep-cycle batteries with the
industry's thickest positive plate. This is the battery that
I use in
my own off-grid system and have never regreted that choice.
Flooded lead-acid battery technology
still offers the longest service life. This is your best

CONCORDE
AGM
AGM (absorbed glass
mat) batteries require no
periodic watering, won't freeze, low self-discharge rate, and are
especially desirable in situations where they will be
unattended over extended periods, like a vacation cabin. AGM
batteries will not spill electrolyte, and there are virtually no fumes
under normal conditions. Concorde makes the best AGM batteries right
here in the USA! This is the battery of choice for
Marine, RV, and any mobile application, or where batteries must be in
an unvented space.

(flooded lead-acid) batteries are
an industry standard heavy-duty battery. Their
series 5000 system of batteries has been manufactured specifically for
renewable energy applications and are designed to offer up to a 20 year
lifetime.
Rugged
design and a 10-year
warranty (first
36 months full; next 84 months pro-rated),
available in a
variety of sizes. S-530 is similar to a Trojan L-16H.
These batteries typically ship from California or Seattle. Smaller

US BATTERY
actually manufactures their lead-acid deep cycle batteries here in the
United States, and has
been doing so since 1928. We mention this because some competitor's
products are simply re-branded Chinese batteries, despite
"stars-and-stripes"
logos and American-sounding company names. Many people consider US
Battery products to be the equal of Trojan
batteries, without paying extra for the brand name and extended
warranty. The US-2200 is the same basic size as a T-105 golf-cart
battery, but with slightly more rated capacity. US Batteries carry a 1-year warranty
just like the standard T-105 model. We often keep a few of the more
common models in stock in our store, special orders take about a week

TROJAN
BATTERIES
Trojan
batteries are
perhaps the best known brand of lower cost deep cycle batteries
in the renewable energy
industry. The Trojan L16 series has a long reputation for
reliability in
smaller systems.
The Trojan L-16RE is an updated version of the standard L16HC
model,
with a
higher electrolyte capacity for longer service in Renewable Energy
applications:
2 years replacement + 5 years pro-rated
warranty. Rated for 700 cycles to 80% depth of discharge.
Trojan T-105 has 12-month warranty. Trojan T-105RE warranty
is 2 years replacement + 3 years pro-rated. Contact me for
warranty documentation. We use a national chain of distributors to
supply Trojan batteries so our customers can often pick them up at the
local
distributor and avoid shipping costs.

BATTERY WATERING SYSTEMS
Turn the most tedious
battery maintenance chore into a breeze! Officially called
"single point watering", it uses a simple
hand pump to add distilled water to the exact factory specified level
every time. No funnels, flashlights or messes, and you never have
to open the cell cap, so there is no hazardous electrolyte exposure and

Consider

In
most cases, a battery bank should be contained in a secure enclosure,
vented to the outside to exhaust noxious and flammable gasses.
I
can provide you with prebuilt battery enclosures to
fit many battery types.
BATTERY
VENT FANS
Are
activated when the battery rea ches a voltage that causes it to
start bubbling, or gassing. The fan exhausts the noxious gases through a
pipe, to the outdoors. Fan can be controlled
with a voltage-based controller (below), or by some charge controls and
inverters. Most charge controllers will require the use of an
external relay ($25) to switch the fan on and off. 12
