To properly decide what pumping system you will need, some information about your water supply and water usage will be needed.  This page will serve as a guide for putting that information in one place.  If you want me to assist in choosing a pump for you, please answer the questions in numbered sequence in an email to me at voodoosolar@wildblue.net   If you don't know the answer to a question, put a "?" next to that number, if a question doesn't apply to your situation put an "X" by the number.  Be sure to include any notes that you think are important.  The more specific information you supply, the more accurately the pump can be sized.

1. If using a well, how deep is it?
2. If not a well, what is your water source?
3. What is the static water level in your well? (the distance down to the water surface when the well isn't being pumped).  If it varies seasonally, use the deeper level here.
4. What is the flow rate of your well?  (How many gallons-per-minute GPM does it produce, also called recharge rate)
5. How many gallons per day do you need?  Some ballpark guidelines:  20-80 gallons per person, 10-25 gallons for livestock, 35 gallons for milk cow, 2 gallons for sheep, 250-500 gallons per hour for one typical lawn sprinkler.
6. Will you be pumping to a non-pressurized tank or cistern, or to a conventional pressure tank?
7. The tank will be how many feet (vertical elevation) above the well head?
8. If using a pressure tank, what pressure will be required?   (30/50psi, or 40/60psi are usual settings)
9. Will you want to power the pump from a battery bank (state DC voltage), or from an AC inverter (state inverter watts and voltage)?  If YES, then how far is it from the power source to the well head?
10. Do you want to power the pump directly from a solar array?  If YES, then how far is it from the array location to the well head?
